How to Create an iTunes Connect Account

I love publishing to the iBooks Store. Why? Well, one reason is that iBooks allows me to have control over my book seller’s account and book pricing in 52 countries. I can set books to FREE anytime I want without an exclusive contract.

If you want to publish on iBooks you must first set up an iTunes Connect account. iTunes Connect is the platform developers use to sell apps and in the iTunes App Store and publishers use to sell ebooks in the iBooks Store. This is also where you’ll manage your content, including contracts, pricing, banking and tax info. You can also access your sales reports.

You can create a Free Books account if you plan to only make ebooks available free in the iBooks Store. This is a quick and simple process that does not require you to enter banking and tax info. It’s a great option if you are located outside the US and just want to make your books available.

But if you want to sell ebooks in the iBooks store, you need to create a Paid Books account, set up agreements, set up banking and tax information, and wait for approval. This process can take up to two weeks or less.

Create an iTunes Connect paid account

iTunes ConnectSo, let’s set up an iTunes Connect account to sell ebooks.

A few things you’ll  need:

  • An Apple ID for the iTunes Store with a credit card on file
  • A US social security number or EIN
  • A valid bank account
  • A Mac computer with OX v10.6 or later

Go to Apple’s iTunes Connect website. Scroll down the page and click the Get Started button.

The iTunes Connect online application opens. At the bottom, use the Select button to choose Books and then click Continue.

Enter your Apple ID and password, click the authorized agent checkbox, and click Enable.

On the Create an Account screen, click Create a Paid Books Account.

Follow the instructions carefully for setting up your account. It will require email authentication. You’ll complete an application and submit it to Apple for approval.

iTunes Connect Agreements

Once your iTunes Connect account is set up, you’ll log in to your new account and go to the Agreements, Tax and Banking icon. Go through the process of creating a contract with Apple by clicking Request under the Agreements section. You’ll then need to set up your tax and banking information.

Here’s a video to help you through the process. And this link provides information on managing your contracts, banking and tax info. It’s intended for app developers, but the information is the same for iBooks Store publishers.

Once your account has been approved, you’ll receive an email from Apple. As noted earlier, this could take up to two weeks for approval.

Now you’re ready to start selling ebooks in the iBook Store!
